Answering Your Questions on Socioeconomics and Its Impact on the Developing Brain

Jamie Hanson, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, answers questions from teachers and educators regarding socioeconomic status and its impact on students from a young age including:

  • How critical are relationships, particularly with teachers?
  • Stress is known to decrease neurons. Can enrichment counteract that process?
  • How does trauma impact development?
  • What should teachers do when the intervention for poor behavior is to pull students out of the classroom, yet that just widens the learning gap and promotes further disengagement from school?

This video is part of a longer session titled “Understanding the Neurobiological Impacts of Child Poverty: Implications for the Classroom and Beyond” presented at the National Science Teachers Association 2019 National Conference in St Louis, MO.
