Schools are an Important Context for Work to Reduce the Impact of Poverty

Many educators want to know how to help students from poor socioeconomic backgrounds deal with common negative experiences. Jamie Hanson, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, discusses how teachers can help students handle issues like feeling unsafe in their own communities and the lack of enrichment opportunities available to them. Hanson shares resources educators can use to help their students confront trauma, ways to counteract the lack of extra enrichment for poorer students, and the impact of having a positive relationship with a supportive role model.
